How To Stay Safe From Ransomware

Ransomware

ransomware is scary

All of us have seen a great many reports in the news over the past few years regarding ransomware attacks. From large, Fortune 500 companies, to oil pipelines, cyber criminals have been busy, with a massive increase seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Billions of dollars have been paid in ransoms. Cyber liability insurance has become a must for businesses, and it has become increasingly difficult to obtain.  With all of this, what must we do to be safe, and to stay safe?

One thing that you may not know is that cybercrime isn’t just focusing on “the big guys”. They have found that there is just as much profit to be obtained from hitting “the little guy” too. Sadly, this is the reality in which we live. Everyone is trying to figure out how to stay safe from viruses, malware, ransomware etc., while being ever mindful of the bottom line. One thing is for sure, no one can ignore these issues any longer. Here is a list of things to think about:

  1. Security in Layers – always make sure to secure your environment in layers.  That means at each end point, network level, external.
  2.  Proper Insurances – there are a variety of solutions out there, and while Halo doesn’t sell insurance, we know some folks that do.
  3.  Proactive Thinking – avoid “head in the sand” thinking, be proactive.  The business you save may be your own!
  4. User Education – Probably the most important component.  You and your users are critical to making sure you stay safe.
